There are many varieties of Kilim rugs. Usually the Serjan and Soumakh rugs are made by needlework and cloth (like embroidery) this is why a kilim differs from a normal carpet.
The people of Iran and the Caucasus are amongst the most predominant makers of Kilim rugs. Kilim differ from another depending upon the region of origin. Mashad Kilims are like Soumakh but differ from other Kilims as it has a softer outer surface and colourful shades. A Kilim has no pile and is regarded as a sound investment.
