Eid al-Adha
Eid al-Adha is the latter of the two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year. It honours the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God’s command. Before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, however, Allah provided a lamb to sacrifice instead.
Observances: Sacrifice of a sheep, cow, goat, buffalo or camel, Eid prayers
Date: Mon, Jul 19, 2021 – Thu, Jul 22, 2021
Origin
When asked about the origin of Eid al–Adha, The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, is reported to have said, “It is a tradition that has come down to us from Abraham.” The Feast of Sacrifice dates from the historic event when Prophet Abraham was commanded by God, in a form of a dream vision, to sacrifice his son, Ishmail.
Traditions
One important tradition for Eid al–Adha is sacrificing an animal, like a cow or goat, and donating the meat to people who cannot afford it. Not all Muslims sacrifice an animal themselves. Some Muslims buy special meat from shops and donate that instead or they donate money to charities that give special meat to others.
