Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a new taxi-sharing pilot service aimed at reducing fares by up to 75% for travelers between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This service, available for six months initially, connects Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai with Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi, offering an affordable and eco-friendly option for passengers.
The taxi-sharing fares are structured to save passengers significantly: with two passengers sharing a ride, the cost is AED132 per person, and when three passengers share, the fare drops to AED88 per person. In cases where four passengers share a taxi, each pays just AED66. Payments can be made conveniently using bank cards or nol cards.
Adel Shakri, director of planning and business development at the RTA’s public transport agency, explained that this initiative seeks to provide an economical travel solution, especially for regular commuters between the two cities. Both locations are well-integrated with public transportation hubs and parking facilities, enhancing accessibility.
Beyond cost savings, the taxi-sharing initiative is designed to reduce carbon emissions and alleviate traffic congestion, contributing positively to the environment. The RTA also aims to limit the use of unlicensed transport services by providing safe, comfortable journeys in official taxis, equipped with safety features such as cameras linked to the Operations Control Center and driver performance monitoring systems.
Depending on the success of this trial, the RTA may consider expanding taxi-sharing services to other locations.
