Amazing Creatures: Red-lipped Batfish
Found on the Galapagos Islands, this fish is actually a pretty bad swimmer, and uses its pectoral fins to walk on the bottom of the ocean.
Despite their weird look, the red–lipped batfish are harmless to humans. There are different types of batfish around the world, and all of them have compact bodies.
The red-lipped batfish is a carnivore and tends to snack on small fish and crustaceans.
These strange looking fish have long and sharp nose and they also look like they put a lot of lipstick on their lip. Some scientist believe the purpose of its red bright lip is for the male of Ogcocephalus darwini to attract the female. The name darwini is named after Darwin.
Their lifespan is said to be approximately up to twelve years.
Who discovered the red lipped batfish?
In fact, its scientific name, Ogcocephalus darwini, is inspired by the famous scientist Charles Darwin who derived his theory of evolution from his work in the Galapagos. Red lipped batfish are typically found at depths of about 30 to 60 feet, but can be found in deeper waters up to 400 feet.
