Endangered Whale Species in our region
There have been 11 different species of cetaceans recorded in Fujairah waters throughout the project to date, out of a known total of 22 species within the wider Arabian region.
We want to highlight those listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List: Indian Ocean Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus indica) Arabian Sea Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) (pictured) Indian Ocean humpback dolphin (Sousa plumbea)
When a species has this ranking by the IUCN, it means that the best available scientific evidence indicates it is facing a very high risk of going extinct in the wild.
This highlights the importance of our survey, and other similar projects, to gather as much information as possible on these cetaceans to help spread awareness on the importance of their conservation. Although these three species have not yet been recorded in Fujairah, they are known to be present in the wider region.
