The Al Aqah Ascent is unique because it is spectacularly hard. It is a route for experienced, confident and fit walkers. If you are not all of these, do not attempt the Al Aqah Ascent. Period!

Have everything squared away and give the Al Aqah Ascent 100% of your attention, 100% of the time.

Unfortunately, the Al Aqah Ascent decides to give you no time or the luxury of a warm up. From the first step, the walk up is steep.

There are parts that are level but our friends again at Fujairah Adventures have made sure these ‘easier’ sections are along ridges at time less than a metre wide. Just to focus your attention and make sure you cannot relax at all they have found some of the steepest drops either sides of these ridges.

The walk starts from between the Mosque and the Adnoc station close to the ‘Shark’ roundabout. Opposite the Rotana Resort, Le Meridien and Intercontinental hotels in the north of Fujairah.

The Geological Trail – Ain Al Sheria

The Geological Trail is named for obvious reasons. The drive to the start gives glimpses of things to come but when you are up close to these mountains you realise just how high they are.

As the trek begins you are instantly surrounded by large rock formations and an infinite variety of colours, there are folds that the formed over millions of years , faults running many metres and rich veins of quartz.

This is quite a long trek at 8.8km and very demanding. The first kilometre is a fairly tough physical effort gaining height along the Wadi, then the serious climbing starts on the purposebuilt hiking trail. There is little chance of getting lost on the trail and signposts are located where they are needed.

On the trail up the Wadi are a series of stone towers marking the way. Once on the manmade sections the trail is quite obvious, as I said there are a few signs but this is long trek and well away from the roads.

Wadi Saham

Wadi Saham in Fujairah

Just before you reach the first villa in the village turn left after the wadi and find a safe place to park. With your water and a nice snack, start walking along the jeep track and you will soon reach a small livestock farm. The goats here love grapes, it is like candy to them, there are some friendly camels and a lot of noisy chickens.

Once you have fed the animals, head on up the valley. Fujairah Adventures have built you some stone towers to guide you on your route but sometimes you have to search a little to find them especially after the recent rains.

The good thing about this walk is that is easy to do as much or as little walking as you want. If you want just to visit the goats and camels at the first farm you have walked about 1km, if you go to the mountain pass and back maybe you have walked 3km and not taken more than an hour. If you complete the entire route from the rest station to Al Hayl and back, as I said that is about 9km and it is a trek not to be taken lightly.

Al Bithnah Nature and Heritage Trail

The Al Bithnah hiking trail is Fujairah’s 50th hiking route to be constructed and it is the country’s very first communitybuilt tourism trail. The development of the trail was team effort between Etihad Rail, Emirates Nature-WWF, the Fujairah Environment Authority, Fujairah Adventures and many local volunteers.

There are numerous reasons for the hiking trail to start and finish in Al Bithnah, but the driving force in its development there was Etihad Rail’s determination to be a ‘good neighbour’ to the local communities through which the UAE’s national rail network passes.

The railway line with its series of bridges and tunnels passes close to the village and they are a striking part of the scenery on this route. The hiking trail starts very close to Al Bithnah fort. As you approach the completely restored fort, a few hundred metres before on your left you see the large notice board which signals the start and finish of the trail.

There is no official parking here but plenty of areas you can safely pull off the dusty trail and park. Alternatively, there is official car parking at the fort. The route itself is quite challenging physically but not technical, you have to give yourselves around 2 or 3 hours to complete it. About 2 minutes away from the sign is a watch tower and from here if you look up the mountain you can make out the trail snaking its way right up to the summit. We can thank all the volunteers for their hard work in constructing this trail and making it such a pleasure to hike on.
