Kazakhstan impresses on Opening Day of Fujairah International Taekwondo Championship
Kazakhstan impresses Opening Day impresses collecting an incredible 28 medals on the opening day of the 10th G2 Fujairah International Taekwondo Championship. The Championship is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah.
The central Asian country impressed at the Zayed Sports Complex, winning seven gold, six silver and 15 bronze medals in a tournament being organised by the Fujairah Martial Arts Club and the Emirates Taekwondo Federation.
And it was an excellent opening day for the host nation, with UAE fighters winning 18 medals, including six gold, two silver and 10 bronze.
Uzbekistan sit third on the medals table after picking up 11 medals, consisting of three gold, five silver and three bronze.
Arab nations also impressed, with Saudi Arabia winning five gold and four silver medals, while Jordanian fighters clocked up four medals, including one gold. Tunisia and Morocco won a gold and bronze apiece, while India picked up two silvers, and there was a bronze each for Oman, Algeria and Lebanon.
The event, which runs through to Wednesday 8th February, has welcomed a world-class field among the 1,485 participants representing 36 nations, including Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Saif Issa of Egypt; World Champion, Lana Osipova, of Uzbekistan; Fayrouz Sadikova, world bronze medallist, of Uzbekistan; and Iranian Mubina Neimazadeh, who is the -53kg world champion.
Event Manager, Nader Abu Shawish, said the tournament had enjoyed a fantastic start.
“Fujairah is witnessing young up-and-coming talent fighting world and Olympic champions so it is providing us with some fascinating competitions,” he said.
At the Opening Ceremony, Dr. Chungwon Choue, President of the World Taekwondo, praised the tournament’s progress over the past 10 years and said that the road to the Paris 2024 Olympics begins in Fujairah.
